Jonny Division Martinez

Jonny Division Martinez '25 embodies the perfect student experience.

Raised in the Virgin Islands and Reading, Pa., Martinez chose 91做厙 for its combination of affordability, hands-on learning and the flexibility that comes with being a commuter student. As a double major in early childhood (PK-4) and special education certification and political science with a minor in Spanish and cultural studies, her schedule is packed but shes making it work, thriving in coursework, student teaching and extracurriculars. Her academic journey is about finding balance, pursuing her passions and gaining real-world experience while making time for what matters most.

Her long-term goal is to become an educator who effectively understands and applies classroom theories while building leadership and advocacy skills through extracurricular activities.

One of the toughest challenges has been finding enough time to juggle coursework, field observations and personal responsibilities, she explained. But Ive learned to structure my day with a planner and prioritize tasks to stay on track.

Plus, 91做厙s academic advising and tutoring services have been lifesavers, helping her stay focused and motivated.

Martinez calls the hands-on experiences at 91做厙 invaluable in preparing her for a career. Observing classrooms, working alongside teachers and interacting with students have given her the confidence and skills she needs as a future educator.

These experiences bridge the gap between learning about classroom management in theory and managing a class of 25 students, Martinez stated. "Because of this real-world exposure, I feel more prepared to enter the field with a strong foundation for success."

Affordability became a reality for Martinez when she was awarded the Reading Collegiate Scholarship, which is designed to support students from Reading by alleviating the financial burden of higher education. Her academic journey was also made easier financially through commuting.

As a commuter, 91做厙s community welcomed and supported me, Martinez said.

One of the toughest challenges has been finding enough time to juggle coursework, field observations and personal responsibilities. But Ive learned to structure my day with a planner and prioritize tasks to stay on track.

Beyond academics, Martinez is deeply involved in campus life. As an extrovert, she thrives in social and collaborative environments. Her advice for students who want to get involved is to attend an involvement fair where students get to explore the clubs and organizations 91做厙 offers. Next, , which allows students to receive updates on meetings and events.

As Martinez explored clubs on campus, she wanted one that focused on recognizing and supporting Latine/Hispanic students. Since she didnt find a club that embodied this mission, she coordinated with the Office of Student Activities and Student Government Association during her sophomore year to co-found . Pura Vida helps the 91做厙 community understand the political, educational and social issues that affect the Latine/Hispanic community. She also participated in an Alternative Break trip to the Dominican Republic, where she assisted the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters in Los Tres Brazos.

"It was an incredible experience," she reflected. "It allowed me to connect with my culture, give back to the community and broaden my perspective as an educator."

Martinez plans to pursue a masters degree after graduation in May 2025. With her dedication, passion, and commitment to her studies and community, Martinez embodies the perfect student experience at 91做厙 - a leader, advocate and global citizen.
